Retarded Velvet
Super-duo, Theresa James and Roger Prince (aka Holiday & Capital), graduated from the Fashion Design program at the Blanche Macdonald Centre for Applied Design (Vancouver, 2008) with the Academic Achievement and Pattern Drafting Awards, followed by the launch of their label, Retarded Velvet.
The duplet have launched globally following riotous runway presentations at Vancouver Fashion Week (March 2010) and Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai (August 2011, March 2012). The brand combines pop art-inspired digital prints with explosive colour that is at once wearable and eye-catching.
In an effort to refine their distinctive look, Holiday and Capital have designed across the spectrum: from high-end, tailored luxury pieces to avant-garde, runway-only wearable art, before finally settling into their casual, relaxed aesthetic that is often unisex and always consists of playing with proportions and volume to create silhouettes that are flattering for different bodies and that are visually electric.
Obsessed with designs that test the boundaries of personal style, the line’s separates range from staples to experimental or hybrid pieces developed to explore new possibilities and inventive designs that are both functional and transformational.
The pair believes that fashion should always be on the cutting edge of what’s progressive and irreverent, without sacrificing pleasure in the creation process and they frequently travel to mine different cultures and landscapes for inspiration in order to bring that sense of adventure to each collection.
